BEIJING, Aug. 26 (Xinhua) -- Western China has been making progress in innovation, with its 12 provincial-level regions holding 531,000 valid invention patents, according to the latest data released Tuesday by China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). Shaanxi Province, located in northwest China, alone accounts for nearly a quarter of this total.

Speaking at a press conference in Beijing, Shen Liping, head of the provincial IP regulator in Shaanxi, attributed the progress to the province’s tightened IP protection in industries such as next-generation information technology, new energy and artificial intelligence.

Shen also noted efforts regarding resolving IP disputes overseas, citing the province’s IP support workstations in Britain and Kazakhstan, which offer legal guidance and assistance services to Chinese firms operating abroad.

To curb infringement, the provincial public security bureaus have deployed big-data-driven early-warning models that can identify potential violations.

Beyond high-tech patents, Shaanxi has also taken advantage of its rich cultural heritage to boost IP innovation. Local designers are encouraged to incorporate symbols like the Terracotta Warriors into their product lines and brand identities. This approach not only helps promote traditional culture but also enhances the recognition of local brands in markets, a local official said.

As of June, Shaanxi had 125,000 valid invention patents and 879,000 valid trademark registrations, the CNIPA noted.
