Situated in Yuanyang county, Southwest China’s Yunnan Province, these terraced paddy fields have been sculpted into the hillsides for generations by the ethnic Hani people. The Hani terraces were created by the ancestors of the ethnic Hani people more than 1,300 years ago.

The terraces follow a distinct vertical structure that incorporates forests, villages, terraces and water supplies, forming an ecological wonder.

As an ecological farming system that has lasted over 1,300 years, the Hani Rice Terraces are a miracle of ecological civilization in harmony with nature.

The terraces were added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage List in 2013.
