At 6 a.m., Hedonglijiacun village in Dagao town, Zhanhua district, Binzhou city, east China’s Shandong Province is already buzzing with activity: colorful fishing nets hanging in courtyards like vibrant canvases, delivery trucks weaving through the alleys, net-weaving machines humming, and salespeople live-streaming to sell fishing nets.

The village, with a fishing net making history of over 100 years, once struggled with outdated techniques, limited sales channels, and a shortage of funds.

To revive its traditional fishing net weaving skills, the village adopted a model integrating the Party branch, cooperatives, and households. With support from the local government, an automated production line was introduced, connecting household workshops with small and micro enterprises. By 2020, the village had 39 online shops, giving a strong boost to the development of its fishing net industry.

"The village has 127 households and is home to more than 70 companies producing and selling fishing nets, with disk-style cast nets making up 60 percent of national total," said Li Congji, the village Party chief.

Today, villagers working in the fishing net industry and related industries earn an average annual income of over 600,000 yuan (about $83,905). The skills are easy to learn, allowing widespread participation from the elderly, young people, and left-behind women from nearby villages.
