"Thanks to more than 27 years of breeding efforts since the 1970s, a new subspecies of sika deer was created in 2003. It was approved by the national committee for livestock and poultry genetic resources and was named Xingkai Lake sika deer in 2004," said Li Heping, a professor of the Northeast Forestry University.

Li added that Xingkai Lake sika deer is one of the six subspecies of sika deer in the world.

During the peak tourist season, numerous visitors come here to enjoy the scenery of the lake and have fun alongside the Xingkai Lake sika deer.
