CALGARY, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Canada's sprinter Laurent Dubreuil broke the national record in the men's 500 meters race to win a gold medal while China's Gao Tingyu took a silver here on Friday at the ISU Speed Skating World Cup.
The Canadian clocked a winning time of 33.778 seconds, refreshing the national record of 34.03 seconds set by his compatriot Jeremy Wotherspoon in 2007. Russia's Pavel Kulizhnikov set the world record of 33.61 seconds in 2019.
China's Gao finished the distance in 33.876 to take the silver, while Japan's Yuma Murakami took the third place in 33.898.
Meanwhile, Italy's Francesca Lollobrigida snatched her first World Cup gold in the women's 3,000m after finishing in a personal best of three minutes and 54.44 seconds, beating home skater Isabelle Weidemann who took the silver and also set a personal best of 3:55.37.
Weidemann followed suit all the way and thought she could reel her in towards the end, while Lollobrigida maintained her pace and countered the attack, pushing the skaters' game into another level.
"(Going into) the last corner, my coach (Maurizio) Marchetto said 'you can win'. So I was like, 'okay, I can win'," Lollobrigida said.
Olga Fatkulina of Russia clocked a personal best of 36.72 seconds to claim the gold in the women's 500m, while reigning Olympic Champion Nao Kodaira of Japan took the silver in 36.81 and Russia's Angelina Golikova won the bronze in 36.82.
Also on Friday, Nils van der Poel of Sweden claimed the men's 5,000m title after beating Davide Ghiotto of Italy and Ted-Jan Bloemen of Canada. Enditem
