The rice harvest season has arrived in Babao town, Guangnan county, Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture, southwest China’s Yunnan Province.
Babao rice is one of Yunnan’s six famous rice varieties. With over 1,000 years of cultivation history, it was once presented as tribute to the imperial court during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
The town’s favorable climate and geography support this premium rice variety, providing local Zhuang people with stable income.
In 2025, Babao town cultivated 45,000 mu (3,000 hectares) of this rice variety involving 132 village groups and 15,109 farming households. The town expects to produce 22,790 tonnes of Babao rice this year, worth more than 82 million yuan ($11.5 million).
The thriving rice industry has increased farmers’ incomes and attracted tourists eager to experience agricultural lifestyles and enjoy the pastoral landscape. This visitor influx has boosted the rural economy, creating a model integrating agriculture with tourism to drive rural revitalization.
